With Christmas coming Wednesday, Emporia Public Works is reminding residents about holiday schedule changes and post-holiday pickup.
Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn, a guest on KVOE's Morning Show this week, says residents won't notice any difference with sanitation crews not picking up trash or recycling Wednesday -- because the city doesn't do any residential trash or recycling pickups. There will be no commercial trash, roll-off or cardboard services Wednesday.
The Transfer Station and Recycling Center close at 3 pm Tuesday and will remain closed on Christmas.
Meanwhile, crews will start their longstanding tradition of picking up extra holiday trash Thursday.
Extra trash will be picked up Thursday, Friday, next Monday and next Tuesday. Senn encourages you to bag the extra trash and break down the extra boxes.
Senn also says you should throw out wrapping paper instead of recycling it. If you would rather take recycling to the Recycling Center, the facility will accept additional materials.
Senn also encourages residents with live trees to take them to dispose them at any of the city's three drop-off locations -- the Fairgrounds north entry, Dillons and Guion's Showcase. Trees will be picked up between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Residents need to take any plastic bags off the trees before dropping them off.
The city has not had a curbside tree pickup program for years and will not have one this year.
