Cremated remains returned to family after found in trash - KVOA Tucson News

TUCSON- A man came across a box of cremated remains while on the job collecting trash in Green Valley.

Roy Shantz has worked for Titan Recycle and Trash for eight years. One day, he was picking up garbage in the area and came across a ton of bags at one residence.

Shantz said with his many years in the business, he figured there was a death in the family.

"When we were tossing the bags in, one of them opened and there was a hard thump," he said.

Shantz said that he knew that hard thump was a box with cremated remains. Turns out, he was right. Those remains were of Bonnie Jean Baumgartner.

He said that for a second, he did not want to mess with it, but then, he had a change of heart.

"What if that was me or a loved one you know, the thing that made the person the person is not in that box anymore," he said. "I understand that but you know, where would you want your final resting place for you or a loved one of yours?"

Shantz believes that the box was not meant to be thrown out. He said he tried looking for relatives and going to the Pima County Sheriff's Department and Green Valley Mortuary for help but had no luck.

"I needed to do something with her, whether it be spread the ashes here," he said. "This be maybe six months after I found her."

When he was back in the area, he said he went back to units where he first picked up the remains and spoke with a manager about what he found.

Shantz said that about two hours later, the manager called him back and got him in contact with a living relative to return the remains.
