LANSING – Lansing's blue trash bags are a thing of the past, but, if you have them lying around, you're not totally out of luck.
Although Lansing stopped accepting the bags for trash collection at the start of this year, the city will allow people to redeem unused bags for credit toward their trash bills.
Previously, Lansing distributed blue bags that could be left curbside. The bags, sold at $11.25 for five, were an alternative to the blue bins which were also offered by the city.
Last year, however, Lansing announced it would require all residents to use bins beginning in 2020. Additionally, the city debuted a less costly option for people with small amounts of trash to collect bins every other week instead of once a week.
Lansing officials say the bins are more efficient and that the automated system for loading them into trucks is safer for trash workers.
The city will collect the defunct blue bags beginning Wednesday and credit residents $2.60 per bag or $13 per roll. The money will count toward a household's Capital Area Recycling and Trash bill next quarter.
The bags will be accepted at local community centers through Jan. 25.
Community centers accepting trash bags include:
- Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Ave.
- Gier Community Center, 2400 Hall St.
- Letts Community Center, 1220 W. Kalamazoo St.
- Schmidt Community Center, 5825 Wise Rd.
The community centers are open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
