JUNO BEACH, Fla. — More than 4,000 pounds of trash were found on our beaches in 2019, according to the Facebook post by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
With the help of 3,960 volunteers and partner organizations, the center said it was was able to conduct 110 beach cleanups and remove 4,578.9 pounds of trash from Florida beaches.
LMC says more than 90 percent of the trash was made of plastic.
Some of the strangest items found on our beaches were a couch, five octopus traps from West Africa, a soccer goal and a motorcycle helmet.
You can help protect our paradise by doing your part.
Anytime you visit the beach, something as simple as putting your trash in a garbage bin will help keep it from ending up on our beach or in the water.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency encourages you to do the following when visiting the beach:
- Bring an extra bag with you so that you can bring your trash home if bins are not available
- If you are fishing, be sure to collect and throw away any broken or used fishing line.
- Pack food and drinks on reusable containers to help minimize the amount of trash that is brought to the beach.
