It’s “Sprocket!”
Intertwining baseball and Huntsville’s space legacy heritage, the Rocket City Trash Pandas minor league baseball team revealed its mascot on Friday night with a name that most certainly translates to the community.
While a sprocket is a wheel with teeth or cogs, it's also a colloquial shorthand for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville.
So with a baseball team sporting a most unique nickname, its mascot perhaps needed its own distinctive moniker.
Sprocket posed for pictures and fist-bumped fans at Bridge Street Town Centre where a crowd had gathered for the annual Christmas tree lighting at the outdoor shopping center.
The mascot is the team logo come to life: A smiling blue creature wearing a silver garbage can with the matching lid atop his head and, of course, a raccoon’s tail. It even included the subtle nod to the Rocket City’s engineering community that’s in the logo with a calculator strapped to his chest.
The team even handed out free baseball cards at its Bridge Street store featuring the mascot.
The mascot reveal was the final build-up to the Trash Pandas' debut season at Toyota Field in Madison after the Mobile BayBears were relocated to north Alabama after last season.
"It's only 175 days until our first game," team president and CEO Ralph Nelson told the crowd before Sprocket came to life. "Not that anyone is counting."
Sprocket was chosen by the "Trash Panda Nation" from six suggestions by the team. The other suggestions: Apollo, Buzz, Cosmo, Crash and Jetson.
Nelson also announced that the team would be donating to a community organization each year and Kids to Love will be the organization in 2020.
The Trash Pandas first game in Madison is scheduled for April 15, 2020, against the Mississippi Braves.
