Emptying the trash can be a messy job, so why not let your garbage can do the work for you? The Townew Trash Can ($99.95) is a unique indoor garbage bin that uses an infrared sensor to open the lid when you wave your hand over it. Better yet, it seals full bags and replace them with fresh ones so you never have to touch (or smell) what's inside. For the most part, the Townew worked well in testing, but every so often it would seal an empty bag, and its low battery alarm is annoying. Moreover, we'd love to see it paired with a mobile app and wireless radio.
Design and Features
There's nothing fancy looking about the Townew can. It's a plastic bin that comes in white or teal, and measures 15.8 inches in height, 9.4 inches wide, and 12.2 inches deep. It's not quite large enough to use as a kitchen trash can, but is well suited for bathroom and office use.
An infrared sensor on the top front lip opens the lid when it detects motion, such as the wave of a hand, and just below that, facing forward is a single button. Press it once quickly to enable Open-Lid mode, which keeps the lid open until you press the button again to close the lid and return to Auto-Sensing mode. A longer button press seals the bag and opens the upper compartment of the can so you can remove the sealed bag. Once you remove the bag the compartment closes, a new bag is dispensed, and the can is ready for use again. Around back are a power port and an On/Off button.
Under the lid is a removable cartridge ring that holds the garbage bags, a thermoplastic sealing mechanism that seals the bag when it is full, and three blue LED indicators. There's also a fan that helps to fully extend the newly dispensed bag by pulling it down to the bottom of the can, and a sensor that detects when the bag is overfilled, at which point the upper compartment will open and the bag will be automatically sealed.
Missing is any sort of wireless radio such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, or a mobile app that can warn you when the battery is getting low, tell you when the bag is nearing full and when the bag ring needs to be replaced, and let you order new rings. It would also be nice to be able to turn off the low-battery alarm (more on this later).
The Townew can be used while plugged-in, or it can run for up to a month using the built-in rechargeable 2,000mAh battery. When the battery is getting low, the interior LEDs will begin flashing and the trash can will begin beeping. It takes around 10 hours to fully charge a drained battery, during which time the LEDs will pulse (breath) slowly. They turn solid blue when the battery is fully charged.
Each bag ring contains 25 bags, and each bag can hold up to six pounds of trash. To replace the bag ring, open the lid, lift out the magnetic ring retainer, and remove the empty ring. Simply drop in a new bag ring, replace the retainer, and you're good to go. A three-pack of recyclable bag rings goes for $17.99, and a six-pack will cost you $29.99. Environment-friendly biodegradable bags are more expensive: A three-pack costs $26.95, and a six-pack will set you back $44.95. That works out to around 36 cents per bag, or around $90 per year based on Townew's average usage estimate of around one ring per month.
Installation and Performance
Setting up the Townew for the first time is easy. Simply plug it in and charge the battery for around 10 hours (or you can leave it plugged-in), place a bag ring in the upper compartment, close the compartment, and that's it.
I placed the bin in my bathroom and it worked as advertised. The lid never failed to lift whenever I waved my hand over the sensor, and it automatically closed after three seconds unless I kept my hand over the sensor. The bag-sealing mechanism also worked well, but on a couple of occasions it sealed an empty or mostly empty bag for no apparent reason. That said, the bin did an excellent job of keeping in odors.
The built-in battery typically gave me four to five weeks of power before requiring a charge, but on more than one occasion I was woken up in the middle of the night to the annoying beep of the low-battery alarm. Unfortunately, other than turning off the power, there's no way to disable the alarm.
Conclusions
With the Townew Smart Trash Can, you no longer have to deal with messy, smelly garbage bags. The bin not only automatically raises the lid when you need to deposit trash and closes it within a few seconds to prevent odors from escaping, it also uses thermoplastic sealing technology to seal full garbage bags so you don't have to look at (or smell) what's inside, and it'll replace the used bag with a fresh one. While it worked relatively well in testing, it did automatically seal a few empty bags, but this was not a regular occurrence and certainly not a deal breaker. However, the folks at Townew missed an opportunity to create a really smart trash bin with a wireless radio and a mobile app that can give you low-bag and low-battery warnings, and allow you to disable the irritating battery alarm.
