Crews cleaning up NYE trash downtown - KOLO

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The downtown celebrations have ended after thousands of people packed the streets for the annual fireworks show.

After the fireworks city of Reno crews started cleaning the leftover trash. The city’s Maintenance and Operations Crew Supervisor Tim Hendricks said the city collects about 2 to 6 cubic yards of trash on New Year’s Day.

He said, “Once the crowd is done, we clean the sidewalks, from bottles and cups, and a little bit of ash from the fireworks.”

Hendricks said crews only have a few hours to clean and reopen the streets by 3 a.m.

“We want to keep traffic flowing and we want to get the participants back inside the casinos where it's safer. You know how it is on New Year's Eve we do not want to mix people with vehicles."

Hendricks said in years past there has been bigger street closures and larger amounts of trash.

“With only a 2nd to 4th street closure it should be very manageable this year,” said Hendricks.
