Forget what day the trash has to go out? N.J. bought an app that will remind you. - NJ.com

If you’ve ever been confused about when trash is getting collected on a holiday week or just which plastic containers are recyclable or not, then this app is for you.

Recycle Coach was rolled out this month in Gloucester Township and for some it was likely just in the nick of time.

“The data is personalized to your address and it populates a calendar,” said Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer. “If there is a holiday in the week it will show when the trash is picked up. That can confuse folks. I know I get confused sometime. This makes it simple.”

New Jersey is the first state to purchase a program that centralizes local recycling information at every government level in one app. The Department of Environmental Protection offers the service to all governments free of charge under a three-year renewable contract. Recycle Coach has a three-tier fee system including basic starting at $495 yearly, standard starting at $1,195, its most popular, it says; and pro starting at $2,495. DEP officials did not immediately report what the state paid for the service.

Gloucester Township, a community of 70,000 residents, rolled out its personalized app this week.

It will set up a personalized garbage and recycling calendar with reminders and allows users to find local disposal information for thousands of household items.

“Furniture Items” was the most common searched-for item on Recycle Coach’s “What goes where?” tool.

Mayer filmed a YouTube video to help launch the app. He filmed a similar public service announcement when the township converted to single-stream recycling a few years ago, eliminating the need to sort recycling items separately.

The app is available on every device, including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

It has 685,770 users since its launch in 2018 and has had more than 4 million app interactions, state officials said. Up to 5 million residents may use it at capacity.

It can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. It’s also accessible through many municipal, county websites and DEP websites. Here’s how to find out if your municipality is signed up.

The app provides information on recycling in more than 200 municipalities and 19 of 21 counties across the state, a DEP official said. Downloads have surpassed more than 860,000. The app was developed by a Canadian company and is available throughout North America.
