The intentions behind the blown kisses were not genuine. The verbal daggers that followed were.
That's how Jimmy Butler handled his altercation with Indiana Pacers guard T.J. Warren during the Miami Heat's 122-108 win on Wednesday, as Butler and Warren became tangled late in the third quarter when the former drove to the basket.
Warren hooked Butler for a foul and the Heat forward responded by stepping toward Warren with a puffed chest. The two had to be separated by their respective benches, and Butler was captured screaming, "You're (expletive) trash!" toward Warren.
Later, after Warren drew an offensive foul from Butler, he clapped behind Butler's head. That earned him a second technical foul and an ejection. Butler celebrated the occasion by blowing kisses at Warren, who flipped his middle finger at Butler as he exited.
If that wasn't enough, Butler took Warren to task after the game.
“I mean, to me, I think it’s tough for him because I can guard him and he can’t guard me,” Butler said. “At the end of the day, that’s what it comes down to. Like I said, I think you’ve just got to watch your mouth in certain situations. There’s some (expletive) you just don’t say as a man. He’s got to see me the next time because I feel like what he said was truly disrespectful. It's all good because we see them again. I ain't scared of nobody. He's talking about, 'Oh, we're going to fight,' this and that. It is what it is to me.
"He's soft. He's soft. He's not even in my (expletive) league. If I was there coach I would never put him on me ever again. Like no, put somebody else on me, because I'm going to tear that (expletive) up every time. He's trash."
Butler, one of seven Heat players in double figures, finished with 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Warren had three points and four rebounds in 23 minutes.
